YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Paste any YouTube link — watch page, short link, Shorts or embed — and get every thumbnail size the video has, up to 1280 × 720.
Watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embeds, mobile URLs and bare video IDs all work.
About the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images published at predictable addresses. The largest, maxresdefault, is 1280 × 720 and exists whenever the uploader provided a high-resolution custom thumbnail. Below it sit sddefault at 640 × 480, hqdefault at 480 × 360, mqdefault at 320 × 180 and default at 120 × 90, along with three frames automatically grabbed from the video itself.
This tool extracts the video ID from whatever link you paste and shows you every size that exists. It handles all the URL shapes YouTube uses: standard watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts URLs, embed URLs, links with timestamps and playlist parameters, and mobile addresses. If you already have a bare eleven-character video ID, paste that instead.
A word on what you can do with the result. Thumbnails are the copyright of whoever made them. Downloading one to study a design, to check how your own thumbnail renders at small sizes, or to build a preview card for a video you are legitimately linking to is ordinary use. Republishing someone else's thumbnail as your own artwork is not, and no tool changes that.

Tips worth knowing
- If maxresdefault is missing, the uploader never provided a high-resolution custom thumbnail — hqdefault at 480 × 360 is then the best available.
- Design your own thumbnails to survive being shown at 320 × 180: three or four large words maximum, and faces big enough to read.
- Replacing an embedded iframe with a thumbnail that loads the player on click is one of the biggest page-speed wins available on a video-heavy page.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the maxres thumbnail missing for some videos?
maxresdefault only exists when the uploader supplied a custom thumbnail of at least 1280 × 720. Videos using an auto-generated frame, and many older uploads, never had one, so the address returns nothing. The tool detects this and shows you the largest size that does exist.
Does this work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Shorts have standard video IDs, so a Shorts URL is parsed the same way. Note that Shorts thumbnails are usually vertical crops of a 16:9 frame, so the stored image may look different from what you see in the Shorts feed.
Is it legal to download a YouTube thumbnail?
Downloading one for personal reference, analysis or to preview a video you are legitimately linking to is normal use. The image remains the copyright of its creator, so republishing it as your own artwork or using it commercially without permission is not something any tool makes acceptable.
Can I get a thumbnail from a private or unlisted video?
Unlisted videos usually work, because their thumbnails are served from the same public addresses. Private videos do not — their images are not publicly served at all, and no tool can retrieve them.
Why does the download open a new tab instead of saving?
Thumbnails are served from YouTube's own image domain, and browsers restrict scripted downloads of cross-origin files. Opening the image and using your browser's save option always works, which is why both routes are offered.
How do I find a video ID manually?
It is the eleven-character string after v= in a watch URL, or after the slash in a youtu.be link. The tool extracts it automatically and displays it so you can check it is the video you meant.
