Lorem Ipsum Generator
Generate exactly as much placeholder text as your layout needs — by paragraphs, sentences or words, as plain text or wrapped in HTML tags.
About the Lorem Ipsum Generator
Lorem ipsum has been the designer's placeholder text since the 1500s, when a printer scrambled a passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum to make a type specimen book. It survived into digital design for one specific reason: it has roughly the letter distribution and word length of English without being readable. That means a layout can be judged on its typography, rhythm and density rather than on whether the copy is any good.
Real copy in a mockup is a trap. Stakeholders read it, react to the wording, and the conversation moves away from the design. Repeated “text here text here” is worse — the eye spots the repetition and the visual rhythm collapses, so the block of text does not look like a block of text. Lorem ipsum sits in between: it looks like language and cannot be read as language.
This generator gives you precise control over the amount. Ask for five paragraphs, or forty words, or twelve sentences, and that is what you get. You can start with the traditional “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opening that clients recognise as placeholder, or begin at a random point in the word pool when you want it to look less canned. HTML output wraps each paragraph in a <p> tag, and there is a list mode for when the design needs bullets rather than prose.
How to use it
- Choose a unitGenerate by paragraphs, sentences or words depending on what your layout is measured in.
- Set the amountEnter how many you need. Paragraph length varies naturally between roughly 25 and 90 words so the text does not look mechanical.
- Pick a formatPlain text for design tools, or HTML for pasting straight into a template or CMS.
- Decide on the classic openingKeep “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” so reviewers instantly recognise placeholder copy, or start at a random point.
- Generate and copyClick generate for a fresh block, then copy it or download it as a text file.
Features
- Three unitsParagraphs, sentences or words — request the exact quantity your layout calls for.

- Live word countEvery generated block reports its word and character count so you can match a design spec.
- Instant regenerationGenerate again for a different block at the same length until the rhythm suits the layout.
Who uses this tool
- Web and UI designersFill wireframes and mockups with text of realistic density so line length and vertical rhythm can be judged honestly.
- Front-end developersStress-test components with long and short content to find where a card breaks or a heading wraps badly.
- Print and layout designersFlow placeholder copy into a brochure or magazine grid to check column balance before the real copy arrives.
- CMS and theme buildersPopulate demo posts and pages so a template can be reviewed with content in it rather than empty.
Tips worth knowing
- Generate slightly more text than the design needs, then trim — it is far more revealing to see where a layout breaks than to see it fit perfectly.
- Keep the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opening in client-facing mockups; it is the universal signal that the copy is not final.
- Use word mode, not paragraph mode, when you are matching a spec that says something like “headline: 8–12 words”.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum actually mean?
Nothing coherent. It derives from a passage in Cicero's “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum”, written in 45 BC, which a 16th-century printer scrambled to create a type specimen. The words are recognisably Latin but the text has no meaning, which is exactly what makes it useful as placeholder copy.
Why not just use real text or repeated filler?
Real text gets read, and reviewers start editing copy instead of reviewing the design. Repeated filler such as “text here text here” creates a visible pattern that makes the block stop looking like a paragraph. Lorem ipsum has the density and word-length distribution of prose without being readable.
Is lorem ipsum bad for SEO?
Only if it reaches a live page. Placeholder text on a published, indexable page is thin content and can cause that page to be ignored or, at worst, hurt the site's overall quality assessment. Placeholder copy in a staging environment or a design file is completely harmless.
Can I generate an exact number of words?
Yes. Switch the unit to “words” and enter the number. The generator returns that exact count, ending on a complete word, which is useful when you are matching a character or word budget in a design specification.
Does the HTML output include anything besides paragraphs?
The HTML mode wraps each paragraph in a
tag. There is also a list mode that outputs a
- with
- items, for layouts where the placeholder needs to be bulleted rather than prose.
Is the generated text always the same?
No. Sentence lengths, word choices and paragraph lengths are randomised on every generation, so clicking generate twice gives you two different blocks of the same requested size.
